Asus PadFone X, a $199 Tablet/Smartphone Combo, Heads to AT&T

Asus’ vision of our mobile computing future, the PadFone X, will be available for pre-order exclusively through AT&T starting June 6. (AT&T says it will ship “later in June.”) The PadFone is a 5-inch Android handset that comes with a 9-inch tablet “dock.” The idea is that the two devices share a processor and memory, as well as a cellular data plan.
Just as there are multiple ways to use the PadFone X, there are multiple ways to buy one. In a statement, AT&T said it will sell the PadFone X for $199 on a two-year contract, or by way of the carrier’s Next installment plans at a price of either $22.92 per month for 18 months, or $29.80 per month for 12 months. (That’s just for hardware: a monthly data plan for the PadFone X would of course cost extra. Read additional warnings about carrier installment plans here.)
The Asus PadFone X is a phone/tablet combo that shares a cellular data planand a CPU.

The smartphone part of the PadFone equation features a 13-megapixel camera that Asus says will be particularly good at shooting low-light photos. There’s also a 2.3GHz, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU inside of the phone, and 16GB of built-in storage, with a MicroSD card slot that can add up to 64GB of extra storage space.
The tablet contains a much larger battery, so Asus says the phone can double its battery life when docked.
Correction: AT&T will allow pre-ordering of the PadFone X on June 6. The article previously stated that the PadFone would be available June 6, and that pre-ordering had begun today.
